Greg Iles est né en 1960 à Stuttgart, en Allemagne, où son père dirigeait la clinique de l'ambassade des États-Unis au plus fort de la Guerre froide. Il connut le succès dès son premier roman, en 1993, un thriller consacré au criminel de guerre Rudolf Hess. Il enchaîne alors les livres (dont un certain nombre publié aux Presses de la Cité et repris en poche) jusqu'à l'accident de voiture en 2011 qui manque de lui coûter la vie et dans lequel il perdra une jambe. Il s'attelle alors à la fameuse trilogie Natchez Burning, composé de Brasier noir, L'Arbre aux morts et Le Sang du Mississippi.
